A Malin Head to Mizen Head Approach; Susan Lynch MA AIP opening 6pm 24th May 2012. PS2, Belfast

Image

In February and March 2012, Belfast based artist Susan Lynch, walked from Malin Head, Co. Donegal to Mizen Head, Co. Cork over the course of a month. The walks were undertaken with her ambition to create an opening for encounter, connecting with people, context and site while passing through and sharing the experience with a wider audience by blogging, sms and through the media. No archaic mud- or stone circles here or contemplated imagery, but everyday communication means.

This installation uses visual media to reflect and translate different aspects of the work from the physical experiential nature of the walking and places to the visceral relationships developed during the process. An installation which uses light as a medium to convey feelings of home coming, shelter, rest and the structure of a tower as a distant object of the destination. Within these silent markers, the text messages, printed out and pinned to the wall, function as lifelines of support, connections and voices in the isolation of the walker.

This is the third of Lynch’s long-distance walks, having walked from Belfast to Newry and Belfast to Galway in 2011. Her interest in encounter and public art practices have developed over the last two years on the MA course ‘Art in Public’ at the University of Ulster

Art In Public cohort present at VICINITY, Catalyst Arts, Belfast: 23rd March 2012

LAB

VICINITY: MA Art in Public

MA Art in Public, University of Ulster

Employing a strategy of “walking as research”, with Catalyst Arts as the hub of a circle of one mile radius, participants from the MA Art in Public course at the University of Ulster have charted a route through the streets of Belfast.  This circumferential journey intersects a wide variety of city neighbourhoods, ranging from Queens University quarter in the south, west via Donegal Rd. to the Falls and Shankill, intersecting the Crumlin and Antrim Roads in the north of the city, through the docklands and the Short Strand before completing the circuit by way of Ravenhill Road and Ormeau Park.

Along the way, the artists have used a wide variety of methods to document their experiences and encounters, including visual documentation, found objects, collected sound tracks and recorded interviews.  The outcomes of this exploratory journey will be presented at the Art in Public Lab in the Catalyst Gallery.  During the exhibition, members of the public are invited to join artists Marie Flaherty and Rob Ireson on a painting/drawing or guerrilla sculpture walk, retracing sections of the route.  As the name suggests, the Lab will be the site of on going action research, and visitors to the gallery will have the opportunity to add their own impressions to this multi-media montage.

MA Art in Public 2011 cohort is:

Astrid Bin, Séamus Dunbar, Marie Flaherty, Suzan Inan, Rob Ireson, Clara Kane, Sarah MacKeever
